If students see that you adapt your style to your learning, you will instantly earn their trust. My first questions on the white board are always: 1. how do I learn? 2. what do I expect from my maths teacher? 3. how do I feel about group work. then I always spend 10 minutes on setting their mathematics goal(s) for the new year. This is always the first step to building / developing TRUST.
